50 Miles For Life Cycle 5: Gearing up to BEAT Dementia

50 Mile Sponsored Ride - Life Cycle 5

Recently, I have taken up cycling wanting to improve my fitness, and it’s quite timely that this opportunity arises.

My wife’s Grandfather has recently been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia. A terrible affliction that has affected several people very close and dear to me over the years, including both my Grandfather, Grandmother, and now more recently, my Grandfather In-Law.  Coincidentally, our daughter (Veila), brought a flyer home from school the other day publicising  the University of Nottingham’s Life Cycle 5 event in aid of research in the field.

In a moment of what I can only describe as a lapse otherwise sound judgement…….. I signed up for the 50 mile ride, much to Veila’s delight…… If only she knew how hilly it is out Belper way!

It seemed a very opportune moment to do some good: in memory of all those currently afflicted by, or caring for family members with dementia, and to help raise valuable funds to combat this terribly destructive disease.

In it’s fifth year, Life Cycle 5, organised by the vice chancellor of the University of Nottingham, will be raising money for the ground breaking research undertaken by  the team at the University of Nottingham with their Nobel Prize winning MRI scanner into all forms of Dementia.

The ride will take place on the 23rd August, starting at Highfields, most likely fairly early.  From there, the route will take me via , Ilkestone, Heanor, Belper, Shottle, Duffield, Little Eaton, Breadsall, & Stanely. The 2.5 Mile climb out Belper to Shottle is somewhat daunting!

My Just Giving page can be found here:    https://www.justgiving.com/James-Clay/
More information on Life Cycle 5 can be found here: Life Cycle 5: Gearing up to Beat Dementia

If you can, please consider sponsoring my ride with whatever you can, every little counts!

I’m initially hoping to raise raise around £400 as an initial goal, although I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to push the target a little further as things get going.

As well as the JustGiving page, I have also configured JustTextGiving to allow small donations via text message.  Donations of: £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 can be made by texting:

  • JIMC48 £1 to 70070
  • JIMC48 £2 to 70070
  • JIMC48 £3 to 70070
  • JIMC48 £4 to 70070
  • JIMC48 £5 to 70070
  • JIMC48 £10 to 70070

GustGiving and JustTextGiving both support Gift Aid, so if you are eligible (UK tax payer), please consider increasing the value of your donations by 25% allowing reclamation of the tax paid on the donation value from HMRC via Gift Aid.

Also, if you could share with any friends and family that would be willing to support the cause, that would be most welcome, even the smallest donations help

Support me on a 50 Mile cycle ride on 23rd August in aid of Life Cycle 5: Gearing up to Beat Dementia

Thanks for all your support
